Welcome to the site and thank you for checking it out. As a supplement to the release of my CD "Best of Friends", as well as future recordings, my goal is to make this website an access point for information about the new pieces I have commissioned, the composers who wrote them and other music they have written. As I add links and information, I hope this will be a useful resource for people interested in music for trombonists. I also urge others to take the initiative and seek out composers who might be intrigued by the idea of writing in a different medium. There is always room for interesting, new trombone music that allows for more people to realize the full potential of an instrument which is often given a secondary role at best!
This web site is an extension of the promise I made to composers to make their works known and accessible to others. I do not want these works to be added to the stacks of music that have been performed once or twice and then filed away lost and/or forgotten.
The photos I have included are an effort to share my experiences and opportunities with others. It is a great privilege to play and work with many great musicians in Los Angeles and I thought this might be a good place to share images of these folks at work and play.
If you don't know already, the process for a second CD is nearly complete with Parma Recordings. I have commissioned works for trombone from Nick Lane, John Steinmetz, Adrienne Albert, Jason Barabba, Steve Williams, Damian Montano, Stephen Yip and Gernot Wolfgang. We recorded in Boston at Futura Productions with engineer John Weston and pianist Karolina Rojahn March 28-31. It was an exhausting and exhilarating several days and all involved are pleased and excited about the prospects. The album is finished and will be released in the spring of 2012. Parma Recordings is producing the CD which will be released on their Navona label and distributed by Naxos.
Damian Montano's commission which is a quintet featuring a solo trombone is called Four plus One and was premiered at Pepperdine university on Monday, October 4 at 7:30 PM in Raitt Recital Hall with the Crown City Brass Quintet. Crown City Brass repeated Damian's new quintet in a recital program at the Daniels Recital Hall at CA State University Long Beach on Tuesday, April 5, 2011 and the University of Texas, Austin on Monday, April 11, 2011. Gernot Wolfgang's work is entitled "Leaps and Bounds" for trombone and piano. It was premiered February 27, 2011 in a recital at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in North Hollywood, CA with pianist Bryan Pezzone. Adrienne Albert's commission, "Wind Tides" is now published and available to purchase on her website where she has included a brief soundclip of the work.
The CD "Best of Friends" is available for purchase online at www.amazon.com, www.cdbaby.com, www.hickeys.com and tapmusic.com.
